The Torment of Matter is an exhibition about the complex relationship between artistic vision and the material properties of things. It highlights two perspectives: whether the material itself is the driving force that influences artistic themes, or whether it is the artist who actually shapes the materials to fit his or her concept. The exhibition thus examines how the materials act not merely as passive media; they engage actively in shaping the creative process itself.
The works in this exhibition show how material represents a crucial tool of expression calling for reflection about the ulterior sense of their creations. The endless fluidity of paint, the fragility of paper, and the unpredictability of natural raw materials challenge artists and hence turn struggle into meaning.
By laying bare the way each constraint of material limitations has consequences on artistic choices, the exhibition actualises a discussion on novelty, experiment, and the equal position between control and limitation. Between those two sides, the influence of ideas on the medium itself comes into play: art can be interpreted as an adaptation and discovery process. The Torment of Matter exposes the dynamic exchange by which artistic intention and material resist each other and transform one another: revealed in resistance and transformation are new realms of possibility.
